The PS4 does not offer any kind of backwards compatibility.

Somewhere in the SONY corporate suite there's an executive that shakes his ( or her ) head and says "Why? Why did I do that?"

So it's emulation time.

If this comes to fruition I'll probably end up getting one. I skipped that entire generation on the PS side.

That's promising news. There were a lot of great games for the PS2.

Is this solely about emulating PS2 games via digital download or are they trying to add support for physical media PS2 games?

I have an extensive library of PS2 games that I still play very often but my PS2 Slim, which I'll have owned for a full decade come this Christmas, is dying and, if Sony could come out with a new version of the PS4 that could play PS2 games straight off the disk, it would certainly be a point in favour of me (eventually, not happening any time soon) buying a PS4 over an XBox One although I may just buy another PS2 Slim from a used game store.

A few of the games I play the most on PS2, like OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast and Ferrari F355 Challenge, couldn't be offered as digital downloads anyway without renegotiating licenses with Ferrari (which Sega is in no financial condition to do).

Sony has offered a line of PS2 classics for PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Store.

Which is the problem--I'm not an "I'm going digital!" type, but upgrading most of the beloved favorite PS2's (and quite a few of the PS Ones) to PS3 Network HD-upgraded downloads doesn't leave much room for wishing for backward-compatible consoles, when the new version has the same game with improvements.
(Just finished the PS3 upgrade of Okami, my first great PS2 love, I've already delved into both Persona classics and am starting to work my way through the SMT Digital Devil origins, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X/X2 have just been upgraded for disk, and I'm currently sneaking my way around the PS3 HD upgrade of Beyond Good & Evil, my second first PS2 love.)
This, OTOH, seems like just a "Classic Archive collection", like the PS3 Sega Genesis collection that had enough disk room to put two dozen cartridge classics on one disk.

The real question is why the PS4 can't have PS3 backwards compatibility, and that had to do with how the Fat 60G PS3 eventually became the Slim:
To make a PS3 backwards-compatible, you had to put the circuits of a PS2 in it. Even with the same lasers, it takes a little more room to put a PS3 into a PS4, or else I'd have bought one when they first came out.

If they get around to PS3 emulation I'd buy PS4 the very second.

That's very unlikely given how very different a beast the PS3's Cell processor is.

That said, this better mean that we can play physical copies of PS2 games on the PS4 otherwise it's just as disappointing as XBone's "reverse compatibility". Also, if the emulation doesn't recognize region locks, then I can finally stop looking for a Japanese PS2.

If it emulates the PS2 in all the way that counts, does that mean it also carries the PS2's emulation compatibility with PS1? Wink

The PS3 I own (bought it in 2009) plays PS1 games, which is a very nice option because I am a huge JRPG kind of person and every once in awhile I'll pop in FF7, 8 and 9, along with Dragon Warrior 7 and play it via my PS3.

That being said, if there is some type of software that would allow the PS4 to play all generations of Playstation titles, that would be really something.

Along with some others who have posted here, I too have a very extensive PS2 library and broke my old fat Ps2 awhile ago. Would love to play Dragon Quest 8, FF12 and Suikoden titles via my PS4.

I'll be anxiously awaiting updates from Sony to see what there next move will be.

Remembering part of the reason for why the PS3 was so expensive? doubtful.

This is likely software emulation meaning you'll likely be playing digital versions of PS2 games not physical. Sony's not about to dump hardware into the PS4 to let you play your games from the PS2 especially if it drives up costs for the system for a feature very few people care that much about.

I'm hoping for the same thing. I have a bunch PS2 games I want to play again and relive some memories, but I'm too lazy to break out my old console. I can already play PS games on my PS3, so a PS4 that'll play PS2 games sounds awesome. Smile

Why the heck you want PS3 emulation? Just buy the PS3 itself, it is still a currently game console that still alive along with successor PS4.

I'm excited to see all the laughable hypocrisy the Sony fanboys will have to offer about this.

If this means that future PS4s will be able to play PS2 games, I will rush out and buy it in a heartbeat. I live in fear of the day I will plug in my PS2 slim for some nostalgic times and nothing shows up on the screen.
