Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, Tales games(hard competition there Tales of Destiny, shame Destiny 2 was never brought over...). It even got ports later.

Now, I'm still waiting for that remake/port/sequel for Dreamcast/Gamecube Skies of Arcadia. And throw in an anime too, it's not like you're not making worser stuff, we're waiting, waiting, ...waiting... (throw in an image of a skeleton sitting on a chair)...

I have almost every port, and am eagerly about to settle in to replay it on my Gamecube in Japanese, and feel just... so stoked, haha. I really wish it'd get a Switch port: I feel like it would do well on everyone's favorite portable.

Definitely would love to see more JRPGs of that era get adaptations or even rereleases so we can give them even more love!

Ironically enough, the OVA was what introduced me to the Tales series as a whole. When I first discovered it, I didn't know it was based on a game. I just looked at the cover and thought "Hey, this looks like a cool fantasy anime! I'm gonna watch it!" And even though I had no context for anything, I still liked it! Fast forward years later, now having actually played the game, I have yet to judge the OVA based on that knowledge, as it's been years since I've seen it. Maybe someone can put it out on Blu-Ray or something.

Yoohoo, Discotek! Why not nab this while you're at it?!

I have two copies of Tales of Symphonia (game) OST but the animation OSTs were apparently only included with the OVA's (happy to be corrected!)

The songs were apparently released in standard and limited edition (with DVD) on "Tales of Symphonia The Animation Sylvarant Songs", plus CD single releases.

Checking amazon.co.jp there were only a few used copies around so I ordered copies.

Discotek hasn't actually outright confirmed that they have it yet. I'm kind of waiting on official confirmation before setting expectations too high.

Then again, it's an ufotable title; I'm not surprised that it still holds up in 2021, looking just as crisp as many notable late 2010s series.
Never mind holds up, it looks better than their later titles. It's a shame though that it hasn't got a dub,I liked the dub cast for the game. Abyss also got a sub-only release, but that was a 26 episode show so it was more understandable.

You know what: you've got a really good point. Honestly, Tales of Symphonia could have been released this year and I'd still have been like, "Wow, this is really easy on the eyes!" I definitely agree: I'd have loved a dub for this because the dub cast is so iconic. This was actually my first time hearing the Japanese cast, and it was a bit strange because I'm so used to hearing Scott Menville as Lloyd that it took me a minute to get used to hearing Katsuyuki Konishi's voice. Still, not bad though like... ugh, I want that dub, haha!

Don't worry, Discotek does indeed have it. This is far the from the time a Discotek license started streaming before an official announcement was made (see: Legend of Black Heaven, Tales of Phantasia the Animation, Saiyuki Reload), and they've stated that their policy is to make those announcements when the home video release is just about ready to solicit, since home video is their primary focus as a company.

I wouldn't be surprised if Symphonia gets officially announced this weekend at Otakon.

So, which is better experienced first, the game or the anime?

a dub was probably never made because it would be too costly to keep the game's cast and fans would be alienated with different voices(which actually happened to the sequel when Bandai Namco got cheap and recast 99% of them).
Talents like Scott Menville,Tara Strong and Jennifer Hale are more expensive to hire than the usual anime dub VA,after all

Way back in the day, I rented it and got about as far as the boss fight against spoiler[Remiel] before it had to be returned. A few years back I bought it on Steam, but found myself struggling a lot with the combat system. Sad If I pick it up again, I honestly might just set all the characters to "Auto".

Generally speaking, I think we can all agree that if you're willing to experience the source material for something that would be the ideal way to start. However, if you're on the fence about trying the game then doing the adaptation first may not be a bad idea, as it could get you excited to play the game.

You know, when I think about it, this could be an ideal game to play on the Steam Deck on the go. That'll probably be the closest it'll ever get to a Switch-like experience...

Of course, but as I don't know when I'll get to it in my backlog this does sound like a good idea, but then I worry it would "ruin" too much of the story to make it worth playing later on Laughing
